Welcome to Certifiable, your exam prep headquarters. Here you'll find questions about some of the tricky areas that are fair game for the certification exams. Following the questions, you'll find the correct answers and explanatory text. We change the questions weekly.

Questions (January 4, 2002)
Answers (January 4, 2002)

This week's questions cover topics for Exam 70-210: Installing, Configuring, and Administering Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional.

Questions (January 4, 2002)

Question 1
You're the network administrator for a telemarketing company of 300 employees and 120 computers, all of which are Windows 2000 Professional machines. The employees work in three shifts, so you've assigned three employees to each computer. Each machine's three employees use the same username and password to log on. However, you often receive complaints that a user from an earlier shift has changed personal settings, such as the background scheme and the screensaver. What can you do to remedy this situation? (Choose all that apply.)

  1. Configure a separate account for each user.
  2. Delete the file ntuser.dat.
  3. Disable roaming profiles.
  4. Disable Group Policies.
  5. Enable mandatory policies.
  6. Rename the file ntuser.dat to ntuser.man.

Question 2
You're experiencing network connectivity problems on your corporate LAN, which you've divided into two subnets: Subnet1 and Subnet2. The subnets are configured with the following information:

Subnet1
   Network ID: 192.168.1.0
   Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
   Router interface: 192.168.1.1

Subnet2
   Network ID: 192.168.2.0
   Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
   Router interface: 192.168.2.1

Subnet2 includes a Windows 2000 Server machine named ServerX1 with an IP address of 192.168.2.10 and a properly configured subnet mask and default gateway. You have properly configured the routing between the two subnets. Which of the following Win2K Professional computers can properly communicate with ServerX1? (Choose all that apply.)

  1. Subnet1's Workstation1, which is configured with an IP address of 192.168.2.14, a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, and a default gateway of 192.168.1.1
  2. Subnet1's Workstation2, which is configured with an IP address of 192.168.1.101, a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, and a default gateway of 192.168.1.1
  3. Subnet1's Workstation3, which is configured with an IP address of 192.168.1.255, a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, and a default gateway of 192.168.1.1
  4. Subnet2's Workstation4, which is configured with an IP address of 192.168.2.17, a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0, and a default gateway of 192.168.2.1
  5. Subnet2's Workstation5, which is configured with an IP address of 192.168.2.143, a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, and no default gateway

Question 3
Which of the following statements about the Windows 2000 boot volume are correct? (Choose all that apply.)

  1. A RAID-5 volume can't contain the boot volume.
  2. A mirrored volume can't contain the boot volume.
  3. A striped volume can't contain the boot volume.
  4. The volume on which you install the Active Directory (AD) database can't be the boot volume.
  5. The volume on which you install the Certificate Services (CS) database can't be the boot volume.
  6. The volume on which you install Remote Installation Services (RIS) can't be the boot volume.

Answers (January 4, 2001)

Answer to Question 1
The correct answers are A—Configure a separate account for each user; and F—Rename the file ntuser.dat to ntuser.man. Currently, all users of a given computer share the same user profile. Therefore, any changes that any one user makes to the profile affect the machine's other users. The first solution, configuring a separate account for each user, is preferable, but the second, renaming the file ntuser.dat to ntuser.man (to change the profile to a mandatory profile), is equally effective.

Answer to Question 2
The correct answers are B—Subnet1's Workstation2, which is configured with an IP address of 192.168.1.101, a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, and a default gateway of 192.168.1.1; D— Subnet2's Workstation4, which is configured with an IP address of 192.168.2.17, a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0, and a default gateway of 192.168.2.1; and E—Subnet2's Workstation5, which is configured with an IP address of 192.168.2.143, a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, and no default gateway.

Workstation1 must have an IP address between 192.168.1.2 through 192.168.1.254 inclusive. Because it doesn’t, Workstation1 can't communicate with ServerX1. Workstation2 is properly configured and can communicate with ServerX1. Given the network ID, Workstation3 has an IP address that’s used for broadcast messages. Therefore, Workstation3 can't properly communicate with ServerX1. Workstation4 doesn't have a proper subnet mask but can still communicate with ServerX1 because it correctly perceives the computer to be on the same subnet as itself. However, communication problems will arise if Workstation4 tries to communicate with computers on other subnets, so the subnet mask should be changed to 255.255.255.0. Workstation5 is properly configured and can communicate with ServerX1.

Answer to Question 3
The correct answers are A—A RAID-5 volume can't contain the boot volume; C—A striped volume can't contain the boot volume; and F—The volume on which you install RIS can't be the boot volume. RAID-5 volumes and striped volumes can't contain the boot volume, but mirrored volumes can. RIS must reside on a volume other than the one that contains the OS files. You can install the CS database and the AD database on the boot volume. However, consider separating the AD database from the AD log files to improve performance.
